YTBI BOARD MEMBER RUNS NYC MARATHON FOR ALS |
|
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS),
often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a
progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve
cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons
reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the
spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The
progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS
eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons
die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control
muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action
progressively affected, patients in the later stages of
the disease may become totally paralyzed. Although the
cause of ALS is not completely understood, the recent
years have brought a wealth of new scientific
understanding regarding the physiology of this disease. |

Denise Surenbrock |
Thomas Baker, elected in June to the
YTB International's Board of Directors, will be running
the 26.2 mile New York City Marathon on Sunday, November
1st in honor of a local Edwardsville, Illinois woman and
to help raise funds for research leading to a cure.
Denise Surenbrock is a young, energetic, doting mother,
devoted wife, and professional CPA who has recently been
diagnosed with this debilitating disease. In less than
six months, Denise now has slurred speech, difficulty
performing simple tasks such as holding a glass or fork,
and often cannot control her legs resulting in falls.
She will soon need a wheelchair. Even though severely
fatigued, she continues to work full time and make her
family her priority. She has given years of service to
the Edwardsville High School Dance Team and Booster
Club, opening her home with her husband Dale to dancers,
parents, and coaches in an effort to bring the team
together. |
Denise is Tom Baker's incentive to complete the New York
City Marathon - to raise money and awareness so that
some day this disease can be cured. Tom said, "I am
asking everyone I can think of to donate for every mile
I run. And while I will not set any speed records, I
WILL finish! If I ever consider quitting Sunday, I just
need to think about how Denise would love one more
opportunity to even walk a fraction of this distance
without falling."
