Top-selling Egypt trip updated with new luxury hotel and Nile Ship

$600 per couple airfare savings and
Small Groups with never more than 16 guests - Guaranteed

March 14, 2011 – Keene, NH – More than a month after efficiently evacuating all of its Small Group travelers from Cairo on January 30 and following a personal visit to Egypt in early March, General Tours World Traveler president Bob Drumm has announced the company’s resumption of travel to Egypt. After visiting hotels and sites, working with the company’s Cairo-based manager and staff, and meeting with the owner of their new Nile Ship, Bob returned with strong optimism about Egypt’s continued appeal for stalwart American travelers.

His on-the-ground reports from Cairo can be read in their entirety on the company’s Facebook page. Also available for viewing is a short video taken during his recent trip.

Updated for extraordinary travel at an extraordinary time

Armed with Mr. Drumm’s personal observations, General Tours has updated its popular 9-day River of the Pharaohs trip. Travelers will now enjoy 4 nights at the brand-new Kempinski Nile Hotel. Located close to the US Embassy and Tahrir Square, its intimate ambience and ideal location make this the perfect luxury hotel for the company’s small group sizes of never more than 16 guests. After two full days of unhurried sightseeing in and around Cairo with experienced Egyptologists, travelers fly to Luxor for a 4-night Nile cruise aboard the stylish Alexander the Great. With only 30 outside suites, this 5-star cruiser enjoys private docking facilities along the Nile. Highly regarded for attentive service and fine cuisine, the ship is a distinguished member of the Chaïne des Rôtisseurs. After disembarking in Aswan, guests fly to Abu Simbel to visit the must-see Temples of Ramses II before returning to Cairo by air.

Discounts through early May and $600 savings on international air

Recognizing that transitions are ongoing in Cairo and other parts of the country, General Tours has lowered its prices by $1,000 per couple for travel through early May. In addition, the company is providing $600 per couple savings on international air for travel anytime in 2011 – whether air is purchased from General Tours or through another source.

These offers can be combined with General Tours' Family & Friends discount with additional savings of $50 to $150 per person when 3 or more travel together.

For bookings and information, Travel Agents can call 800-221-2216 or visit GeneralTours.com.

Irish Soda Bread

A traditional side of bread served in Ireland is known as Irish Soda Bread. This bread is a variety of “quick bread”, using baking soda instead of yeast as a leavening agent. Irish Soda Bread began being made in the 1840s when the bicarbonate of soda, or baking soda, was first introduced. Bakers found that the baking soda as a leavening agent worked well with their soft wheat that was grown in Ireland, and yeast was much slower-acting than the quick baking soda version. Irish Soda Bread’s most basic form is flour, baking soda, buttermilk, and salt, but the bread now has countless variations, such as adding sugar, raisins, caraway seeds, eggs, chocolate, and icing.

Check out this recipe to make your own version of
Irish Soda Bread:

- 4 cups all purpose flour

- 1 teaspoon baking soda

- 1 teaspoon salt

- 1 – 1 1/2 cups buttermilk

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Brush a baking sheet with melted butter or a non-stick spray.

Combine dry ingredients in a deep bowl. Gradually stir in 1 cup of buttermilk, beating constantly, until dough is firm enough to be gathered into a ball. If dough crumbles, add up to ½ cup more buttermilk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it holds together.

Place on a lightly floured surface and pat gently into a 8-inch flattened round loaf.

Place loaf on baking sheet and slash a ½-inch deep “X” into the top of the dough with a small, sharp knife.

Bake at 425 degrees F for about 45 minutes, or until the top is golden.

Serve hot.

Serve up your own slice of Ireland by baking your very own Irish Soda Bread for St. Patrick’s Day, served great with corned beef and cabbage.

And don’t forget to check out the many escorted tours and independent vacations available now to Ireland. Visit Ireland and take in the gorgeous coastlines and unspoiled landscapes, castles and lighthouses, and visit local restaurants for their own versions of soda bread.
